"Come up with several ways of documenting the passage
of time, based on where you are sitting."
This exploration implores me to observe time in several new
ways without looking to the clock for answers. Time has always been a striking
concept to me as it completely dominates most of our lives. We live on a fixed
schedule, an established timetable which determines such things about us as
diligence, relevance, and dependability, as well as what we’re allowed to do,
or what’s acceptable. But time can be a much milder thing as well. I think it
can guide us much more gently if we allow it. Rather than be ruled by the hands
of a clock (or digits), it’s quite nice to let the day drift on peacefully and
track our moments with other methods.
The most readily available indicator of the passage of time
is of course the sun outside and the clouds and weather, which I can see
drifting outside my window. Aside from that, I think of my stomach anticipating
its next meal and of my energy level waxing and waning. Usually around this
time I’m getting excited for my weekend and a workout.
I can track my time with every page turn of my book and
every mouse click from my neighbor. I can gauge the elapsing time with keyboard
strokes and excited murmurs.
Around me I hear music playing and a TV from somewhere farther
off. Each new song is an interval, each episode marks a new division. I think
about my heartbeat and how it chugs along marking every moment.
